About Alpaca Fleece
During the Incan heyday (about 1200 – 1500 A.D.), alpaca fiber was reserved for use in royal garments. Prized for its silky texture, alpaca fleece is similar to cashmere. One alpaca can produce up to 12 pounds of prime blanket fiber in a year and is sheared annually in the spring. Because alpacas do not secret lanolin as sheep do, most people can wear alpaca fiber without an allergic reaction.
